How to stand out on social media

If you ask any blogger or small business owner what their best marketing tool is, I’m sure that most (if not all) will say their social media platforms.

One of the main reasons why so many people have jumped on the social media bandwagon is that it is free. It literally costs NOTHING to set up and run a page for your business. Not only that, though, it’s a great way to reach out to your followers and customers and show that you aren’t just running a  business.

People love to know the PERSON behind the brand these days and social media is the perfect platform to showcase who YOU are.

Here are a few tips to striking the perfect balance of personal and professional on your social media…

Dedicate 1 post per week that let your personality shine through

Showcasing your product or service should be the number 1 priority for you on social media. Try dedicating at least 1 post per week that shares something a little more personal and that showcases who you are.

When you write this tweet, Instagram caption, or Facebook status, you need to make sure that your personality shines through in the text. Make sure you’re writing in your own voice. The best way to achieve that is to write everything in a conversational style and tone. Imagine you’re talking to your friends!

However, as you are using your social media for professional reasons, the tone should still remain professional.

Here are some topics you might like to cover:

  • juggling work, kids and life

  • life as a ‘fempreneur’

  • a funny behind the scenes photo

  • a ‘business fail’ story and how you grew from it

These are all totally relatable topics that can show who you are and increase engagement on your feed!

Think about your profile picture

Your followers will want to know that they are interacting with you and not just some bot. So, you need a profile picture that shows exactly who you are. It’s a good idea to get a professionally shot photo that you can use as your profile picture on every channel for consistency.

If you want a logo or avatar as your profile image, you might want to get an avatar drawn by someone like The illustrators | illustration artists in Australia so that your profiles really stand out. Canva is also a great tool to use to create your own graphics. It’s user friendly and was founded by a woman too! I use Canva to create graphics for my Youtube Channel.

Whichever one you go with, be sure to use it for each profile so that your followers can recognise you across each platform.

Add some emojis

If there is one thing that makes online conversation stand out from regular conversation in other parts of everyday life, it has to be the emoji. These little images have really transformed how we talk to each other online. It’s a good idea to add a few emojis to all of your online messages whenever they are appropriate, just remember to stay professional. The message is then more eye-catching, personal and fun!

There has been a tonne of research carried out on emoji’s and how they encourage real-time engagement too, which is really interesting. Have a play around and see what works.

Take A Look Behind The Scenes

People follow bloggers on social media because they want to know who the person is behind the blog or brand. The best way to give your followers a glimpse into who you really are is to add a few behind-the-scenes shots or posts. For instance, you might want to tweet a few photos from behind the scenes of a photo shoot for one of your blog post. You could also share some photos of new designs you’re working on. This will also help you to show your human side.

All in all, your social media should be a reflection of who you are and what your business is all about.
