Understanding hearing loss & how to prevent it

hearing loss

Anyone can be struck by hearing loss. We should not assume you need to be elderly for this to happen.

There are many reasons why you might experience some hearing loss, and the truth is that it can happen to anyone at any time. Because of that, you should think about trying to discover as much as you can about this common health problem, as you might with anything else that you know you might experience at some point in your life. In this post, we are going to help you do exactly that by looking at some of the common causes of hearing loss, along with the most notable treatments and preventions. Knowing all this is bound to help you should you experience it yourself.

Causes

Although you can experience hearing loss as a simple result of getting a little older and your ears not working as well anymore, there are also many other reasons you might experience it in your life, and you can be any age when you do so. One of the more common causes of hearing loss in people of all ages is an infection. Usually, this will be an infection of the inner ear, but even an infection of the middle or outer ear canal can affect hearing. You will know that it is an infection if, as well as hearing loss, you also experience pain in the ears or a feeling of being out of balance in your body. You might also be leaking from one or both ears. Hearing loss may also occur from lifestyle choices, such as listening to a lot of loud music frequently.

Treatments

Of course, the treatment depends on the cause, but for the most common hearing loss - that of old age - you will almost certainly be prescribed with a hearing aid. Hearing aids have been around awhile now, and they are only getting better and better. You might be surprised at just how effective they are, in fact, and you will be able to hear very well indeed with one, even if your loss is great. If you have an infection instead, then the treatment will usually be a round of antibiotics to clear that up, which should then return your hearing to normal. If you do have an infection, make sure you see the doctor soon, to stop any potential damage from occurring.

Prevention

In order to prevent hearing loss in later life, you should take care to look after the ears as well as you can. That means not exposing yourself to a great amount of loud noise on a regular basis, and ensuring that you clean out your ears regularly too.

When cleaning, however, be sure not to plug anything into the ear canal, as you might cause a rupture in your eardrum, which can be damaging and extremely painful.

Do all that, and you should prevent the greater proportion of any hearing loss you are likely to experience.
