EOFY sales are a great opportunity for a bargain, and this year, that could be truer than ever. The COVID crisis has been especially tough on the retail industry, so we'll likely see some pretty eye-catching deals from brands trying to attract shoppers.

As tempting as these sales can be, you don’t want to break the bank.

Here are a few tips on how to make the most of the sales, as well as where you can score some of the best deals this year.

Set a budget

If there is one rule you follow, make it this one. I think we’ve all been guilty of spending a little (or a lot) more than we planned around sale time, and while it’s fine to splurge every now and then, it's not a habit you want to get into.

There are a few ways you can go about setting a budget, depending on how you want to shop. The simplest is to set an overall budget for your shopping and commit to keeping all purchases below this total.

However, this method can sometimes get a little tough when you have to choose where to spend your money. In that case, it can be helpful to break this amount down into categories like clothes, tech or beauty, for example. That way, your purchases aren’t competing for a place in the budget as they all have their own allocation.

For the super prepared sale shopper, you can take this one step further. If you know what you want to buy, try setting an upper limit for each purchase. This amount will be the absolute most you would pay for that product, and it will determine when to walk away from something that’s not a good deal.

Do your research

Going into the sales with a plan will make a world of difference. The wonder of online shopping means that you can browse before you buy, which leaves less room for those in-store impulse purchases.

Since a lot of retailers will often start their sales early online, you can get an idea of the kind of discounts you might see in-store. Use this as an opportunity to compare prices across retailers to make sure you’re getting the best price on the day. This will also save you time once you hit the shops.

You should also make sure to compare the original price with the sale price. It’s all too easy to get carried away when you see the markdown stickers and sale banners and end up buying something that isn’t actually that heavily discounted.

Take advantage of discount codes

If you’re going to stick to shopping online this sale season, it’s important to remember that not all sales are automatically applied. This means you’ll want to keep an eye out for any discount codes you can add at the checkout. Whether it’s 10% off or a free shipping deal, it all adds to how much you’re saving.

Stay up to date with brands’ social media accounts and sign up for mailing lists so you’re aware of any EOFY discount codes going around. It also doesn’t hurt to do a quick Google search before making your payment to see if there are any codes floating around online.
