7 Dental Care Mistakes To Avoid

Want to keep your teeth looking white and healthy? Of course you do! Make sure that you’re not making any of these common dental care mistakes.

1. Don't brush too hard

It’s possible to brush your teeth too hard. In fact, many people do it without realising. This can strip away the enamel and make teeth sensitive. It can also make teeth appear yellow – stripping away the enamel reveals the dentin underneath, which is yellow in colour. Only ever brush in light circle across each tooth so that you’re not damaging your teeth.

2. Don't use the same toothbrush for more than four months

A lot of people also make the mistake of using the same toothbrush for more than a year. You should replace your toothbrush every three to four months – after this period the bristles are likely to become damaged and will be less effective at getting rid of plaque.

3. Rinse your mouth out after brushing!

Many of us are also guilty of washing out our mouths after brushing our teeth. Whilst not everyone likes the taste of toothpaste, it’s actually better to let some toothpaste sit on the teeth for a while after brushing. Feel free to spit most of it out, but don’t rinse out all the toothpaste.

4. Clean your gums and tongue

It’s not just your teeth than need cleaning with a toothbrush. The gums and tongue can also benefit from cleaning. Without cleaning these areas, bacteria could be building up here and contributing to bad oral hygiene, which results in bad breath. And ain't nobody got time for that.

Try a stainless steel tongue scraper! Unlike plastic alternatives, these can be cleaned and reused.

5. Floss, floss, floss!

Want to get those annoying bits of food out that stuck in between your teeth? Flossing is a great way to remove this debri. This in turn can prevent infection from food that is stuck between teeth. When flossing, be careful of doing it to close to the gum as the floss could rub and irritate the space between teeth.

6. Don't skip dental check-ups

Dental check-ups can be useful for spotting early signs of tooth and gum problems. You may also be able to get plaque build-ups professionally cleaned. Find a dental clinic in your area that you can rely on. Check-ups generally aren’t expensive – you may be able to take out insurance to cover these dental costs.

7. Don't let toothache become unbearable before seeking help

Similarly, you should always visit a dentist the moment that you start to get toothache. Such aches could be the result of an infection – catch this infection early enough and you may be able to clear it up with antibiotics. However, let it get worse and this infection could spread, resulting in the need for more invasive treatment such as root canal treatment or tooth removal. Not only could you avoid the discomfort of this invasive treatment, but you’ll also avoid the costs of this treatment.
