Maintaining your stock room or warehouse is crucial for organisation and safety. Whether you keep your stock in your garage or you have a facility, here are a few tips for keeping it in check.
Have a Schedule
The most important aspect of maintaining a stock room or warehouses is to make sure they're as clean as possible. The best way to do this is to have a checklist of all the cleaning that need to be done on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis. This could include mopping the floors once a week or dusting down the shelves monthly. If you don’t do this, dust may leave marks on your products, which is the last thing you need when you are trying to leave a good impression on your customers.
If you have staff, think about allocating one task per person. This spreads the cleaning work around and will ensure everyone knows they're job.
Bins and Rubbish
Bins should never really get to the point where they overflow. If this happens then your staff might be forced to dump litter where they shouldn’t. Not only does this cause mess, but it can also be a health hazard. Invest in separate bins for recycling and general waste. It's also a good idea for you to have larger bins dotted around if you have a larger space.
Clean as you Go
It should go without saying, but clean up mess as you make it! This includes putting away packaging, boxes and stationary as you use them. Doing this makes a big difference!
Turn your Inventory
Stock that is out of date or gathering dust will cause issues for the whole business. You need to check in order to make sure that your stock is accurate and that it is also up to date as well. Boxes that are dusty make it harder for an employee to grip them, and they also take up space that could be better used for something else. If you have some extra space in your stock room, it may be worth you trying to rent it out to someone else. This is a fantastic way for you to make money and it also helps you to make the most out of the space you have.
Floor Labelling
This goes for those who have a larger space, but floor labelling is a fantastic way for you to keep your warehouse organised. It also makes it much easier to identify stock as well. It’s so important that you are able to keep a record of which stock is stored where, and that you also update your labels from time to time. If you label parts of the warehouse then this will make it much easier for your cleaning staff to deal with spillages as well, as they will know exactly where to go without having to work it out based on
the floor plan or memory alone. It’s also important that you have enough lighting to illuminate the lanes at night. Industrial lights are the best way for you to get this done, and they are very easy for you to compare here.
In-Demand Items
Products that are in-demand should always be placed lower down or in front of other stock so they can be accessed easily. Putting thought into how you organise your stock could save you time and effort when packing orders.
